When, later, I decided to go back and give my music opus numbers, I chose Garden Music, from what in the end was quite a mass of schoolboy and student work, to be op. 1.  It seemed amidst all its obvious borrowings to have something of its own; also to be viable for performance in a way not so with all the stuff around it, before and after.  A later revizion, removing whole stretches of jejune sub-Webern, makes it more viable still.  But the Messiaen - a direct response to rehearsals and performance of Oiseaux Exotiques at the Dartington Summer School 1961 — can't and shouldn't be expunged so neatly.
